How a TENS machine works in labour

How a TENS machine works in labour

If you’ve been looking into natural pain relief options for labour, you’ve probably come across a TENS machine.

But how does it actually work?

And more importantly ~ does it really help?

Let’s break it down simply.

What is a TENS machine?

A TENS machine (which stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a small, handheld device that sends gentle electrical pulses through pads placed on your back.

These pulses aren’t harmful - they feel like a tingling or buzzing sensation on your skin.

In labour, a TENS machine is used to help manage contraction pain, particularly in the early and active stages.

How does a TENS machine reduce pain?

A TENS machine works in two main ways:

1. It blocks pain signals

Your body sends pain signals to your brain through your nervous system.

The electrical pulses from the TENS machine help “interrupt” these signals before they reach your brain.

Think of it like turning down the volume on the pain.

2. It helps your body release endorphins

TENS machines can also stimulate the release of endorphins - your body’s natural pain-relieving hormones.

Endorphins help you feel calmer, more in control, and better able to cope with contractions.

What does it feel like?

Most women describe the sensation as:

  • A gentle tingling or buzzing
  • Warm and comforting
  • Something they can control

You’re in control of the intensity, and you can increase it as your contractions get stronger.

There’s also a “boost” button, which gives you extra intensity during contractions, then returns to a lower level in between.

When should you start using a TENS machine?

For best results, a TENS machine should be started in early labour.

This gives your body time to build up endorphins and get the full benefit before contractions become more intense.

We generally recommend having your TENS ready to go from around 37 weeks - just in case labour starts earlier than expected.

Can you use a TENS machine with other pain relief?

Yes - and this is one of the biggest benefits.

A TENS machine can be used:

  • At home in early labour
  • In the car on the way to hospital
  • Alongside some other pain relief methods

Even if you decide to use additional options later, many women love having a TENS machine to stay comfortable and in control early on.

Why so many women choose TENS

  • Drug-free pain relief
  • You stay in control at all times
  • Can be used at home and in hospital
  • No impact on baby
  • Helps you stay mobile during labour

Is a TENS machine right for you?

Every birth is different - and there’s no one “right” way to manage pain.

But if you’re looking for a natural, flexible option that you can start using at home, a TENS machine is a great tool to have in your birth plan.
